Speaker 1: (00:00)
Hey, mama. I am so thrilled that you’re hanging out with us today. The podcast episode today is a little bit different than what we normally talk about on the show or how the podcast episodes are normally formatted. Because today we’re just having a real open, vulnerable conversation, mama to mama a about what it means to be a leader, how leadership is developed if you’ve ever asked yourself. I wonder if I have it. I wonder if I truly have what it takes to be the leader that my team needs to be the leader that can grow a team to be the person that people want to follow to be someone that attracts other moms to them or other people, other business builders, other customers do have really have it. And so we’re gonna dive into that today. I’m just gonna give you a little bit of insight, a little bit of history about how I got where I am today. A little bit of, uh, history on some of the lessons that I’ve learned, hope that you get a lot from this episode. And me just sharing my heart with you guys today.

Speaker 1: (01:39)
Hey guys. Okay. So, like I said, today’s episode, it’s a little bit different because it’s not so much of a step by step or a how to, it’s more of just me opening up and sharing my story with you guys sharing, um, some advice and some lessons learned along the way. And I’ll tell you what gave me the idea for this episode and why I thought, okay. I have got to talk to the moms who listened to the podcast about this topic is because I actually saw a post that I had made in the successful networking mom’s Facebook group. And I made the post probably when the group first started. So we’re talking a while now, the group has been in existence since 2020. So it actually started, um, during the pan. And that’s when I was still working my full-time career in sales and marketing for a media company, a national media company.

Speaker 1: (02:33)
And I just was feeling a tug on my heart that maybe there was more, and maybe there was another way that I could serve and that I could use my skills and my passions, what I was good at, but also what I really felt led and called to do to build my own business. And that’s what I ultimately did. I ended up leaving my corporate career in 2020 in the middle of a pandemic. So it felt a little crazy at the time, but in hindsight, like I can totally see how God was using that time in my life to just give me clarity and you know, a purpose and a passion. And I still have that purpose today, but I say all that to say that I saw a post that I made early in the group. And, and, um, it really just reminded me of what I wanna tell you guys about today.

Speaker 1: (03:24)
Like one main point that I want you to grab a hold of, to truly start to believe and start to live by in your business. And I think when you do, it’s gonna make all the difference for you cuz it made all the difference for me. So the post started off like this, okay. It said three weeks into my first sales job. I was sitting in my car sobbing in a parking lot. And you guys, I can remember that moment. So very clearly. And so when I saw this post and I’m like, well, that was my, you know, first statement. And then I went on to say some other things that I’ll read to you in a second, but I just remember that emotion. So clearly of feeling like completely defeated and okay, so a little recap of, um, what was going on here. In fact, I’ll read the rest of the beginning of this post.

Speaker 1: (04:16)
Okay. It says three weeks into my first sales job. I was sitting in my car sobbing in a parking lot. I had started with a new company and gone into a meeting and was asked, so you’re new, right? Natural born salespeople just have it and you don’t have it. Are you sure this is the career for you? And then I had like the crying emojis after that post. And so it’s like, oh my gosh, what a moment where I started to question everything about myself, right? Like I was new. I was in my early twenties. I was starting a sales career fresh out of college. Honestly. I didn’t know that I wanted to do sales, which is funny because that’s obviously what I’ve made my career out of. And that’s still what I teach my, how to do now is to like sell confidently and authentically.

Speaker 1: (05:06)
And so I’ve been selling now for 11 years and I love it. And it’s so funny that it started with someone telling me this and it made me question everything. But like I said, I didn’t get into sales thinking, oh, I wanna be a salesperson. It just happened organically. I was fresh outta college. I had my marketing degree. I was all excited. Um, I really thought I, I actually wanted to be maybe a journalist or a writer or something like that. Um, but a sales physician came available and I felt like it was a great way to get my foot in the door and marketing and advertis. And so I took it and that’s what I did ended up loving it. But the first couple of months were not easy. It was filled with a lot of people saying things to me, exactly. Like this person did you know, like, are you sure this is what you wanna do?

Speaker 1: (05:55)
Like, I don’t know if you’re cut out for this. So how in the world did I become an expert in sales? How did I go on to help hundreds of women learn how to sell confidently? How did I end up starting a group dedicated to helping other people learn this skill? Okay. So for starters, that potential customer, okay. The person that said that to me, they were right about one thing. And that was that. I didn’t just have it. And you know why it’s because it, if you could see me, I’m doing these air quotes, it doesn’t exist. There is not just one personnel trait or one talent or one style that makes people good at selling. And you know, I told you a couple of minutes ago that I wanted you to grasp onto this one truth and really start to internalize and believe it.

Speaker 1: (06:52)
And that it would change your business. And this is that truth. Okay. Which is that it doesn’t exist. Leaders are not born that way. Okay. We’re not born being leaders. We’re not born with it either. You’re a leader or you’re not, you’re either good at sales or you’re not. You’re either great at what you do and passionate and authentic or you’re not okay. You’re not born. It doesn’t exist that way a leaders and that type of skillset is made not born. Okay. So there’s not just one thing that you’re born with that you either have it or you don’t, that’s gonna make you good at selling make you good at leading make you good at running a business. Okay. So here’s what I learned. And yeah, I learned at the, a hard way, because sitting in your car, balling your eyes out because you’re questioning everything.

Speaker 1: (07:44)
You’re like I was sitting there going, okay. I went to college, I did everything. Right. I got this sales job. I was so excited about this new opportunity. But what if this person’s right? What if I just don’t have it like now, what am I gonna do? Right. But here’s what I learned selling. It’s just understanding what people need or want and offering it to them with a price attached. Okay. So when I got rid of like this mental image and what I thought, a quote unquote, good salesperson looked like or talked like, or sounded like, or what they said or did, that’s when I started seeing success. So I actually aid with that company for a couple of years. I pushed past not just that one experience, but I mean, sales can kind of knock you down. And I was doing sales in person.

Speaker 1: (08:29)
Okay. So people were saying negative things to my face sometimes. And when I say negative things, I don’t mean they were mean, I mean, sometimes no hurts, right? Like sometimes no knocks this day on and we feel negatively about it. But I kept on because I knew that I had something to offer that genuinely helped people. And that helped me like completely change my mindset. And it grew me as a leader because then I was able to lead other people in making that same mindset shift. And interestingly enough, I actually went on to be recognized as one of the TA, top salespeople in the whole national company two years later. Okay. So in just two years from crying in my car, because someone told me I didn’t have what it was not being able to get sales and completely questioning everything that I was doing to two years later, my husband and I are on this amazing vacation in Amelia island.

Speaker 1: (09:23)
And I’m getting recognized as one of the top salespeople in the whole national company. Like it was, it was surreal. Okay. But I want you to hear me loud and clear when I say this. Okay. So if you have been told or you believe the lie that you just don’t have it and it’s affecting how you lead, it’s affecting how you interact with your team, it’s affecting how you sell your business opportunity. Okay. I don’t want you to believe that lie anymore. Okay. Because the, it does doesn’t exist. Okay. Leaders are made, they’re not just born. So if someone has ever said something to you, like they did it to me, or maybe you say it to yourself because guys, we can be really mean. The words that we say to ourself can be meaner than anything that someone online are in our business could tell us.

Speaker 1: (10:15)
Right? So with, you’ve had it said to you, or whether you think it to yourself and you’ve made up the story in your head because you haven’t seen the results in your business so far that you were hoping for don’t you dare keep believing it. Okay. Don’t believe that you don’t just have it because I promise you, you can be successful in sales, especially online sales guys. Okay. It is a skill that you can learn. You can develop when you understand principles. When you understand people, when you understand how to develop this same mentality in other people on your team, that is when you can step into your position as a leader. And it all starts with belief. And so I don’t want you believing that you don’t have it. I don’t want you believing that there is one certain personality type that’s good at being a leader that there’s one certain personality type.

Speaker 1: (11:05)
That’s gonna be able to build a six figure business. That’s not true. You have the potential to do it. It’s just a skillset that you’re gonna learn and master. So I hope that has been urging to you guys today. Like I said, this episode was a little unscripted and unplanned. I just saw this post and I thought, you know, the story I haven’t shared on the podcast before people in my group may have heard it. But I just think that it’s so important that we start believing this for ourselves. Okay. Because when I did, that’s obviously when my business changed, that’s when my whole mindset changed, you know, 11 years a lot happens in 11 years. Right. So I went on to, um, transition that company actually acquired another company. So my corporate, um, the corporation that I was with got even bigger and I continued to thrive in sales.

Speaker 1: (12:02)
I mean, it just, it became something that not only I enjoyed, but like I was really passionate about. And now I teach people to do that. Like looking back, it’s so funny to see where I came from to where I am now, but it’s not because I had it. It’s not because I was born with any certain thing. It’s just because I’ve taken the time and I’ve invested in myself to really hone and develop that skillset. So I am rooting so hard for you over here to also step into that leader mentality for, and your team so that you can grow and see the success that you want. The podcast is a great place to start if you want to really hone that skillset. So I encourage you just go back and listen to some of the more practical, tangible episodes that I have. I have episodes that literally teach you step by step, how to sell confident, how to be authentic, how to beat imposter syndrome, how to, um, do online marketing.

Speaker 1: (12:59)
Like those are all things that are teachable. You can learn that. Okay. And you don’t have to have quote unquote it to be able to learn these things. Okay. And if you want my help, I’d be more than happy to connect with you in our Facebook or group. It’s a free community of moms who are building online businesses, just like you.
